Comparison of screws

Ground Dog™ screw in peg -vs- Coach Bolt & Coach Screw

It is difficult to place the Coach Bolt, Coach Screw, and the Ground Dog™ screw in pegs in the same category, as there are some substantial differences.  Take a moment to review these.

Ground Dog™ screw in pegs

The Ground Dog™ screw in pegs:

  • Have been designed to suit ground engagement
  • Are made of stainless steel, which makes it light weight and corrosion resistance, so it won’t rust
  • Are designed with a tapered shaft with a self-drilling tip for better penetration
  • Have an aggressive thread
  • The pitch thread is further apart, which means:
    • It has less revolutions when screwing in and out (making it quick and easy to insert or remove)
    • It is well suited to soil/ground as it allows more soil/gravel/small rocks to sit between the threads, giving it a stronger hold
  • The head is 19mm and is the same size used for caravan stabilizer legs, which means you only need to carry one drill socket to do two jobs
  • Accommodates a hook or wing collar, that are adjustable locking nuts
Coach Bolt/Coach Screw

  • The coach bolt and coach screws have been designed for timber
  • Coach bolts & coach screws are made of steel and offer different finishes or coatings, including stainless steel, Bright Zinc Plated, and Passivated Hot Dipped Galvanised, to name a few
  • Coach bolt needs a pilot hole drilled first
  • Coach screws have a tapered shaft
  • The pitch thread is closer together, which means:
    • It takes longer to screw in as it must go through more revolutions when screwing in and out (this will be time consuming if doing by hand)
    • Ideally suited to timber, not soil
    • Has a weak hold in soil
  • The head may vary in size which means you may need to carry another socket & drill adaptor
  • Does not come with a cap for protection

Ground Dog™ screw in pegs -vs- Tent Pegs

The traditional hammer-in tent pegs have been around forever and will work in quite a lot of cases, but let’s face it, it can be hard work to hammer them in, and in some cases even harder to get them back out.  You also need a different size peg for different applications, meaning you need to carry around a whole lot more pegs.  Many of us end up with a collection of bent pieces of steel.   If the ground is extremely hard, you will be hard pressed to even get them in at all.  Watch the video below to see Paul & Judd in the Tent Peg Challenge.  Filmed at a recent Caravan show, the boys show how hard it is to hammer in a traditional tent peg in comparison to the Ground Dog™ screw in tent peg.
